Big Data: Disaster Response | The Ohio State University
Thanks to big data — and a professor from the Ohio State University — rescuers at disaster sites are saving lives with satellites.
Timely and efficient rescue responses can be the difference between life and death during disasters.
To improve response times, Ohio State engineer Rongjun Qin and colleagues are developing technologies to speed up the processing of satellite images of disaster zones.
Using this technology, Qin and his colleagues can quickly identify heavily damaged regions, as well as areas where citizens are cut off from help. With this data, first responders can more quickly reach and rescue those in need.
