Mazda CX 9 Overview
The Mazda CX-9 is a standout in the highly cluttered mid-sized three-row crossover segment. All other mainline car manufacturers use a V5 engine to do the work; Mazda has gone with a turbocharged 4-cylinder in CX-9 and with good results. In addition the interior of the CX-9 is on par with many luxury brands but at a more attainable price.
The engine is a 2.5L turbocharged 4-Cylinder with a useful 250hp on premium fuel but 227hp when using regular grade gas. More importantly to utility buyers is 310lb.-ft of torque, plus an impressive 3500 lb towing capacity with or without premium fuel. There is one FWD model but the majority of buyers will choose AWD. The CX-9 uses a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The CX-9 is rated at 11.5L/100km in the city and 8.9L on the highway.
Standard safety features including front, side and curtain air bags along with traction and stability control. Advanced forward collision warning and autonomous braking is available as a package, where the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander come standard.
The CX-9 comes with 7-passenger seating, where some competitors offer optional 8-passengers configuration, Heated seats are standard on the front seats but optional on the second row seats, as is a heated steering wheel. What makes the CX-9 compelling is the level of finish and design that looks right out of a German luxury car. A centre mounter wheel similar to Audi’s MMI system controls the 7-inch centre screen or optional 8-inch unit with navigation. Mazda has stated that AA and ACP, will eventually be available in its cars but as of this time not so. The wood and leather is top notch. All Pilot models come with a large centre screen that doubles as a backup camera, there is available navigation and Honda includes
The Mazda CX-9 starts at roughly $36,000 for FWD, the first AWD is $42,000 and the top CX-9 is roughly $47,000
Here are the highlights
Mazda puts a premium on driving dynamics and handling and even with a large three-row utility they pull it off. The Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine does not let this vehicle down it is very well calibrated for this use. The interior is next level, looking rather luxurious. The seating is limited to 7-passengers where direct competitors offer up to 8. That being said, this CX-9 flies below the radar and is a worth choice for a family vehicle.
